Treble crochet in UK terms or double crochet in US terms is a taller stitch than double crochet (UK). It is around twice as tall as double crochet which means that your work will grow more quickly with this stitch, in the same way as a wall would grow more quickly if you used taller bricks.

Treble crochet (double US) is used in SO many crochet patterns. I have used it here in my Simplest Wristwarmer pattern (see above). I will be sharing this pattern with my blog subscribers soon,

Before you begin a row of treble crochet, two chain stitches must be made as treble stitches are the equivalent of two ‘chains’ tall. If you do not make these chains the work will be too tight and pulled at the beginning of the row.

  1. Once you have made your two chain stitches wrap your yarn round your hook, then insert your hook into the stitch below. If you look at the ‘top’ of your work (equivalent to the top of your wall) there should be a plait/braid-like patter of yarn along it – two strands of yarn for each stitch. You can see this on the left hand side of the work in the image below. Ensure that you insert your hook under both strands of yarn. (note in this series of images the first treble stitch of this row has already been made)

2. Once your hook is inserted into the stitch, wrap your yarn over your hook again and pull through a loop. After pulling the yarn through you should have three loops on your hook:

3. Yarn-round-hook and pull through two of the loops on your hook

5. Yarn-round-hook and pull through the final two loops on your hook

6. You have made your first treble stitch.
