Solid Granny Square

One of the most popular patterns in crochet.  You can combine them together to make blankets, cushions and more.  Or just keep going to make them bigger and bigger.

TUTORIAL:

Start by making a chain of 4.

Make a slip stitch into the first chain, to create a small loop.

(Beginners:  If you have trouble seeing the loop because it’s a bit small, then trying chaining 6 to make your loop.)

ROUND ONE:

Then make another 4 chains.

The rest of this round will all be worked into the loop that we made.

Start by making 3 treble crochet (tr) stitches into the loop.

Chain 2 (This will become your corner space)

Then make a further 3 treble stitches.

Then 2 chains, for another corner space then 3 more treble stitches.  (Three sides of our tiny square are now complete.)

Make 2 more chains for the last corner space and then 2 more treble stitches.

We’ve now worked all the way to the start of the round and need to join the beginning and end of this first round together.  To do that we’ll make a slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the starting chain of 4.

(Where my pin is pointing in the picture)

Work your hook into the correct chain and make the slip stitch.

This completes the first row.
If you are using just one colour for your square, make a slip stitch into the space at the corner, you are now ready to begin the second row.

If you’d like to change colour, cut your yarn now and attach the new colour in this corner space.

ROUND TWO:

Chain 4 to begin the round.

Make 2 treble stitches into the same corner space.

Now make 1 treble stitch into each stitch of the first round.  There will be 3 for this round.

Now begin the corner by making 2 treble crochets into the corner space.

Finish the corner by chaining 2 and then making a further 2 treble crochets into the same space.

Now we can work the side of the square by making a treble crochet into each stitch again, which will bring you to the next corner space.

Make another corner by working 2 trebles, 2 chains and then 2 trebles, all into the corner space.

Work along the third side of the square and make the last corner in the same way.  This brings us to the last side of the square.

Work along the last side of the square (1tr in each stitch) to reach the corner space.

Make a final treble crochet into the corner space where we started.  (The beginning chain of 4 acts as our 2nd treble and makes the corner space).

Make a slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the beginning chain of 4 to close the work together.

(My pin points to the third chain)

If you are continuing in the same colour, make another slip stitch into the corner space so that you are ready to start the next round.

If you are working with a new colour for each row, you’ll need to change yarns and add the new colour to the corner space.

ROUND THREE:

Now all we need to do is repeat the steps from ROUND TWO.  Start by making 4 chains.

Make 2 treble stitches into the corner space.

Work a treble crochet into each of the stitches along the side.

Then work 2 treble crochets, 2 chains and 2 more treble crochets into the corner space.

Repeat these same steps around the square until you reach the beginning corner space.

Make 1 treble into the beginning corner space and then a slip stitch into the 3rd chain of the beginning chain of 4.

Slip stitch into the corner space to get ready for the next round to continue in the same colour yarn.
Or cut and join new colour to the corner space.

And that’s it!

All the rounds now will be the same as given for ROUND THREE.  You can follow the instructions above to make as many rounds as you like to the make the square the size you want.

Once you’re confident, you can just use the written directions below as a reminder of what to do.

Here’s a five round solid granny, with a new colour for every row:
